SORSOGON CITY, 21Aug2016 (BicolToday.com) – In the midst of inclement weather yesterday, progressive groups and family of the late Teodoro “Todoy” Escanilla offered a tribute in honor and memory of him.

Karapatan Sorsogon together with other progressive organizations spearheaded the mass and candle lighting in his tomb in Barcelona, Sorsogon.

Escanilla is a human rights worker, former spokesman Rights Sorsogon and radio host murdered on August 20, 2015 within the walls of his house. He contributed in advancing the interests of the people and against oppression and abuse of state brutality in the province.

Six assassins aboard three motorcycles, which have supported the armed men riding a tricycle, went to the house of Ka Tudoy to kill him at midnight of August 19, 2015. The assailants succeeded in their goal according to Karapatan Sorsogon.

“Elements of the 31st Infantry Battalion Philippine Army (IBPA) based in the neighborhood of KaTudoy killed him,” said Hermie Forton, spokesperson of Karapatan Sorsogon. “There were no other entity or group with a motive to kill him.”

According to Forton, the 31st IBPA hated Ka Tudoy because of revealing their crimes and serious violation of human rights of its citizens in the province.

“The recent disclosure of Ka Tudoy on its program PBN-DZMS was about the cruel, inhuman and brutal killings of 31st IBPA in three captured members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Irosin, Sorsogon. That was the latest reason why the assassins pulled their trigger that took the life of Ka Tudoy,” Forton added.

“It’s pathetic to think that the 31st IBPA as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and required by the Constitution to defend and protect the human rights of the people was to launch a military operation to kill someone not involved in armed conflict (civilians), not carrying weapons and no fighting capability,” said Forton.

Until now, there was no justice for Ka Tudoy and for his family. The Municipal Police Office (MPO) of Barcelona and the PNP-Sorsogon are acting blind and deaf on the case of Ka Tudoy according to Forton.

“Also, there is still no clarification of the murder of patriots and activists ahead of Tudoy. They are all victims of counter-insurgency Oplan Bantay Laya 1 and 2 of the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s regime and the Oplan Bayanihan of the regime of Benigno Aquino III. All the security forces of the state killed them,” said Forton. [BicolToday.com]
