July 4 incident
Last July 4, 2016, a group of men believed to be members of the Philippine Army were tailing the Karapatan Staff, while they were going to the local electric coop in Sorsogon City to pay bills.
Upon noticing that a group of men were following the two (2) staffers, they entered a convenience store, but the men had spread out near the place.
When the 2 staffers got out of the store, they immediately boarded a tricycle to get away from the area, but a motorcycle-riding man immediately tried to pursue, but he lost the tail after failing to identify the tricycle the 2 staffers were riding.
The human rights group Karapatan denounces such continued harassment to right workers.
They demand the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte to call off the military intel group to stop harassing rights workers.
Last year, August 19 killing
Last year, August 19, Karapatan Sorsogon spokesman and radio host Teodoro Escanilla was killed inside his house in Barcelona when an unidentified gunman strafed him with Armalite automatic fire.
Before Escanilla was killed, the same pattern of stalking had been done by intel operatives, conducting surveillance at his office, and also tailing him especially during his radio program at a local station in Sorsogon.
Escanilla, in his radio program, was a critic of human rights abuses committed by the military against civilians and innocent people.
A year after the killing of Escanilla, police are still facing a blank wall from bagging the suspects.
