SORSOGON CITY, 19Jan2016 ( – The dream of owning a house and lot for an informal settler comes true after the city government of Sorsogon awarded Original Certificate of Titles to 183 families who were resettled at city -owned land after spending most of their lives as informal settlers fearing eviction anytime.

The original certificate of titles and the certificate of land entitlements were awarded to the beneficiaries of Barangay Buhatan, Salog, Burabod, Bulabog and Capuy recently by Mayor Sally Lee who said that by 2020, the city should be free of informal settlers.

The awardees are settlers in city-owned properties prompting the mayor to make representation with the city council to pass a measure authorizing the documentation of city- owned land encroached by settlers and to prepare documents for eventual ownership in coordination with the national government agencies concerned.

The city government, as early as 2002, invested in land banking foreseeing the development of certain city properties into a mix commercial fun center which was realized after the resettlement of informal settlers at Rompeolas, now one of the most visited places for relaxation. The former informal settlers are now permanently settled to a relocation site at the back of city hall in Barangay Cabid-an.

This effort bags the administration of Sally Lee the “Natatanging Lingkod Maralita Award for 2015” from the Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor.

Recently, Lee in a television program said that she is “investing on people” and this pronouncement was made true when the 183 informal settlers occupying city lands are now holders of Certificate of Land Entitlement and the Original Certificate of Title. []
