SORSOGON CITY, 1Sept2015 (BicolToday.com) – The attention is now focus on the ill-effects of cigarette smoking as Sorsogon City Mayor Sally Lee again put premium on the health and well-being of city residents when she declared Sorsogon City as Smoke-Free City yesterday. The declaration was presented to a multi-sectoral audience as part of the continuing education program against the ill-effects of cigarette smoking.
In her declaration, Lee said the City Government of Sorsogon put a premium on the health and well-being of our constituents. She believe that a healthy citizenry is an empowered citizenry that will roll-on the economy of the community.
Citing statistics, she said, smoking is one of the biggest threats to public health, killing nearly 6 million people all over the world every year and causing undue economic burdens on families.
In adults, second-hand smoke causes serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer. Infants, it causes sudden death. In pregnant women, it causes low birth weight was how she urged city residents to stop smoking.
He notes that almost half of children regularly breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke in public places, in their houses and leisure parks are not even spared by smokers addict.
The 600,000 premature deaths per year is a grim statistics for second hand smokers and 28% as recorded death are children.
The city government aims to reduce this mortality for we should comply with the clean air act as the saying goes “let us give our children an earth which they could live for”. We firmly believe that everyone has the inalienable right to breathe clean air and to live in smoke-free surroundings, Lee ended. [BicolToday.com]
