SORSOGON CITY, 24April2014 (BicolToday.com) – – The plight of migrant workers was in focus in the just concluded three day seminar-workshop on Migration for Development participated by Sorsogon City local chief executive Mayor Sally Lee together with 14 other LCE’s in Naga City.
The civil society and the academe presence in the event will help in concretizing inputs in the Bicol Region why poverty are the root causes of migrant Filipino workers decision to work abroad rather than as personal choice for a career path.
The program provides capacity development for local government units in participation by other stakeholders in mainstreaming migration and development in local governance.
It is hope to come-up with a doable action plan on how to include local overseas Filipino workers size-u[p investment potentials of his hometown which would give security of income while working overseas. It will help possible OFW not to be at the mercy of illegal recruiters and intends to assist deported and undocumented workers and its families.
To make the plan workable, the seminar inputs will be use as a guide for city planners and it intends to solicit the support of international fund donors such that of the European Union, UNDP, the Swiss Development Corps and the Commission of Filipino Overseas who were strong advocates of “working abroad as a choice rather than a necessity”.
It is also documenting local residents who are overseas workers as ready reference in cases of their need for immediate intervention which may help ease the problems of their family on the condition of local overseas workers while abroad. [BicolToday.com]
