SORSOGON CITY, 24Jan2014 (BicolToday.com) – Faculty and students of Sorsogon State College (SSC) believe that politicians in the province have hands in selecting the college president.
These are their views when asked to comment on the public presentation Tuesday of the candidates for the state college presidency.
According to one faculty, who requested anonymity, said: ‘Ganito naman talaga ang kalakalan dito sa SSC, laging pinapakialaman ng pulitiko’. (This is how it works at SSC, the politicians meddle).
When asked who is the politician behind, she said ‘sino pa ba di si Escudero, referring to Sen. Chiz Escudero. Nakita nyo naman na full force ang Escudero boys dito sa presentation.’ (Who else but Escudero, referring to Senator Chiz Escudero. The Escudero boys are in full force in this presentation.)
When asked who’s candidate or applicant that Escudero is supporting, she said ‘sino pa di yung malapit din naman sa kanila.’ (Who else, but the one who is close to him.)
Another sophomore student said, ‘sa pagkaalaman namin may pulitikong nagba back-up sa kandidato o aplikante para sa SSC president, pero sana hindi sa palakasan ang pagpili kundi sa qualifications.’ (We know there are politicians backing-up their candidates or applicants for SSC president, we hope selections shall be based on qualifications, not connections.)
He added that, “we are hoping the search committee headed by Fr. Ernesto Arceo, Rector and President of Aquinas University will consider the best and most qualified applicant, because the future of our school is at stake. If they choose the wrong one, we the students and faculty will suffer for another four (4) years.”
Meanwhile, faculty and students are divided in their choices for the SSC presidency.
In an interview with BicolToday.com, they said that they prepare for Dr. Erwin Malto because of his young age and good vision for SSC. His humble start as a clerk who studied hard until he finished his doctoral degree is the big edge over the other two aspiring applicants.
While other faculty members support Dr. Modesto Detera because he has been in the SSC for a long time and a seasoned educator.
Others said Dr. Miguel Guarin is their choice, because of his good program and vision for the SSC.
The aspirants have doctoral degrees, and in-between their present assignments, have served the state college in various capacities.
Detera is the current president of Partido State College. Malto is the top educator of Dr. Emilio B, Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology in Mandaon, Masbate, while Guarin has served as campus director of the college Bulan Campus. [BicolToday.com]
