LEGAZPI CITY, 22Jan2014 (PNA) – After more than a year of court hearings, the Regional Trial Court in this city found a man guilty of selling methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu” and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The court also ordered Arnel L. Mendres to pay a fine of P1 million.
Shabu is a dangerous drug defined and penalized under Section 5, paragraph 1 of R.A. 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Drugs Act of 2002.
Archie A Grande, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office V director, said PDEA operatives arrested Mendres after selling suspected shabu to an undercover agent who acted as a poseur-buyer in Barangay Travesia, Guinobatan, Albay.
Grande hailed the court decision as another milestone in their campaign against illegal drugs and lauded the efforts of the men and women of PDEA Regional Office V, especially the agents, for their accomplishments.
“Putting these criminals to jail is one of the major milestones after the risks and dangers of any anti-drug operation. We can expect more high-value and high-volume operations from our agents this year as this conviction boosts the agency’s morale to work even harder,” he said. (PNA)
