MANILA, 13Jan2014 (PNA) – The government’s weather agency has expanded to the Bicol region its flooding and rainfall warning, expecting the low-pressure area (LPA) currently driving rains in Mindanao to move to that location in the next three days.

”We expect the LPA to exit Mindanao, move to the Visayas then be pulled by the cold front eastward towards Bicol Region,” said Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weatherman Mario Palafox, before noon Monday.

He noted available data indicate the prevailing northeast monsoon or ‘amihan’ wind may prolong rainy conditions in Mindanao.

In its 10:30 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA estimated the LPA’s location at 70 km southwest of Cagayan de Oro City.

The city lies at Mindanao’s northern portion bordering the Visayas.

PAGASA said the LPA will bring cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms over CARAGA region, Zamboanga peninsula, Eastern and Central Visayas as well as the Bicol region, possibly triggering flash floods and landslides.

The agency forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms in the rest of Southern Luzon as well as the remaining areas in Visayas and Mindanao.

”Residents are advised to take all necessary precautionary measures,” PAGASA said in the advisory.

Earlier Monday, PAGASA cautioned about possible flooding and landslides in several areas of Mindanao and in the Visayas’ Leyte province. (PNA)
