LEGAZPI CITY, 7Oct2013 (PNA) – Navy operatives from the Naval Forces for Southern Luzon caught two fishing vessels and their 26 crew members while actually fishing in the waters off Balatan, Camarines Sur, on Saturday, a Navy official said Monday.
Lt. Romeo Oliva, Navforsol public affairs officer, said Navy Patrol Gunboat (PG) 851 apprehended F/V Michael Jarin and F/V Erna IX illegally fishing at 3.5 nautical miles west off Coguit Point, Balatan, with their fishing nets in violation of Republic Act 8550 or the Fisheries Code of the Philippines.
Oliva said the PG 851 was conducting deterrent patrol and surface operations along the waters off Burias and Ticao Pass, Masbate, when its crewmen sighted and intercepted the two vessels.
He said the Navy operatives confiscated 600 kilos of illegally caught fish with a total estimated market value of P20 million, assorted fishing gear and paraphernalia, aside from the two vessels operated by Erna Enterprise owned by a certain Ernesto Bagasbas from Balatan, Camarines Sur.
The Navy officer said their personnel escorted the seized items to the Balatan Pier and subsequently turned them over to the fishery officer of the local government unit of Balatan for further investigation, proper disposition and filing of appropriate charges. (PNA)
