MANILA, 1Oct2013 (PNA) – The Dept. of Justice is set to appeal the dismissal by the Court of Appeals of their motion for reconsideration in the murder case against former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes.
Justice Secretary Leila M. De Lima Tuesday, in a text message, gave assurances the government will elevate to the Supreme Court the ruling of the CA upholding its earlier ruling exonerating Reyes from the murder of broadcaster and environmentalist Dr. Gerry Ortega.
De Lima did not state when the government would file the appeal.
Meanwhile, the camp of the Ortega family maintained they will not be swayed by the CA ruling in favor of the former governor.
According to Atty. Alex Avisado, counsel of the Ortegas, the decision of the CA was merely based on “technicality.”
Nevertheless, the Ortega counsel said they will take the case up to the SC.
Avisado said they are even more determined now that the corruption in the use of the Malampaya Fund has been disclosed, which was also exposed then by Doc Gerry.
He added it will be unfair if the former governor and his brother, former Coron, Palawan Mayor Mario Reyes will not be held liable.
The Ortega camp expressed the belief that in the final analysis, justice can only be served to upright people. (PNA)
