MANILA, 5Sept2013 – A newspaper editor based in Calapan City was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen Wednesday (Sept. 4) afternoon, the second journalist murdered within a week.
Initial reports from Calapan Police said the two gunmen followed Vergel Bico, 40, editor for the local Bandera Pilipino, from Brgy. (village) Balite to Brgy. Pachoca. Upon reaching Brgy. Pachoca, one of the assailants, seen wearing a grey shirt, shot the editor dead.
Bico was rushed to Maria Estrella Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A follow-up investigation is ongoing.
Bico was the second journalist to be killed in a span of one week. Two unidentified suspects killed radio broadcaster Fernando Solijon in Brgy. Buru-un, Iligan City late Thursday (Aug. 29) evening.
If work-related, Bico would be the 158th journalist killed in the line of duty since 1986; and the 17th killed under the administration of Pres. Benigno Aquino III.
Oriental Mindoro Media Club President Joe Leuterio condemned Bico’s killing and called on Supt. Ronaldo de Jesus, Provincial Police Director, to investigate the killing.
