VIRAC, Catanduanes, 04Sept2013 – Members of Catanduanes police barred journalists from covering the election of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) chapter in the said province, the local chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) reported yesterday.
Ramil Soliveres, NUJP-Catanduanes chairperson, said reporters were prevented from entering the Provincial Capitol Dome, where the provincial PCL elections were being held, supposedly upon orders from the office of the provincial director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Atty. Arnaldo Escober serves as provincial director of DILG in Catanduanes.
Joel Maglaqui of DILG Catanduanes insisted journalists were being barred from covering the elections by virtue of an order supposedly given by PCL chapter president Juan Velchez.
Velchez instructed the DILG to ban coverage as PCL supposedly prohibits the media from doing so as per its guidelines, said Soliveres. But when journalists demanded for a copy of the guidelines, they were not given any.
Soliveres denounced the said act and added they were allowed to enter the hall only when the session was adjourned for lunch. (NUJP)
