SC asked to declare pork barrel unconstitutional

MANILA, 29Aug2013 (PNA) – A petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking to declare unconstitutional the Pork Barrel System.

The petition for prohibition was filed by the Social Justice System through its president Atty. Samson Alcantara.

Named respondents in the petition are Senate President Franklin M. Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Jr.

In their petition, the SJS also asked the SC to issue a writ of prohibition to stop Congress from passing a law allotting a fund in the pork barrel system in any form or name that it may be called.

The petitioners argued that under the pork barrel system, “misappropriation” is committed on the part of government.

They also argued the allocation in the pork barrel can be considered as “betrayal of public trust” and disadvantageous to the public.

They said because of the pork barrel, the President can control the Congress through the Department of Budget and Management whereby he can be order the delay in the release of pork barrel to the lawmakers. (PNA)
