The assault by heavily armed members of the Iloilo City police’s Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit on radio station Aksyon Radyo early Sunday (Aug. 25) morning, and the subsequent justification by chief of police Ruperto Floro that the heavy-handed tactics employed by his men was “standard operating procedure” are proof that, for all their profuse claims, state security forces continue to have no inkling of what human rights are and what their role in a democracy is. ILOILO CITY, 28Aug2013 (PNA) – The fate of policemen who make up the core of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team accused of manhandling workers from Iloilo Aksyon Radyo, has been entrusted to the police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) by ICPO Director Ruperto Floro, Jr.

Floro who also indicated his willingness to inhibit himself from investigative proceedings as an assurance “that no whitewash would arise.”

Chief Inspector Gilbert Gorero, spokesman for ICPO, said the SWAT members who have been lampooned in the local media for incompetence over their perceived failure to identify the suspects from the victims have signified their readiness to submit to an investigation.

The controversial assault by the SWAT team on the Carlos Uy Building in Mandurriao district here which houses Aksyon Radyo, an affiliate of the popular Manila-based DZRH, stemmed from a rumble ensuing between youths of rivalgangs inside the Smallville Complex where resto-bars abound.

Policemen tried to break up the fracas as gunshots rang out, leaving five youths wounded and the chase ending at thevicinity of the radio station. Radio personnel called police for help when the youths, some of them allegedly armed banged at the main door of the station. Minutes later, the SWAT team arrived, but instead poked their guns at Aksyon Radyo employees, ordered them tostrip, and kicked the security guard on the butt. The scenes were caught by the CCTV camera, and will become the basis of the investigation. (PNA)
