MANILA, 25Aug2014 – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the National Capital Region Police Office Sunday announced all traffic and security preparations are ready for Monday’s “Million People March” against the allegedly graft-ridden pork barrel funds at the Luneta Park in Manila.
MMDA Assistant General for Operations Emerson Carlos said the agency will deploy about 350 personnel, including traffic enforcers, first aid responders and street sweepers on Monday.
Carlos said a traffic re-routing plan will also be implemented at Roxas Boulevard, Taft Avenue, Kalaw and P. Burgos.
He added the portion in Roxas Boulevard between Kalaw at P. Burgos at Katigbak will be closed to traffic before the rally starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.
Carlos also appealed to protesters not to bring their children to the gathering.
Carlos said the MMDA is in coordination with the city government of Manila, particularly the local traffic bureau, and the NCRPO to ensure that the protest by various groups will be peaceful and orderly.
NCRPO Director Chief Superintendent Marcelo Garbo Jr. said the Manila Police Department has been placed on full alert effective last Saturday in preparation for the mass action.
Chief Supt. Isagani Genabe, MPD chief, said around 400 police officers will be deployed to secure Monday’s protest action.
Since the Million People March event page was created last Aug 17, thousands have signified their intention to join the protest action against the pork barrel.
Simultaneous protest actions will also be held in key cities of the country such as in Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Cagayan De Oro Dagupan, and Puerto Princesa. (PNA)
