Two died in a small mining in Sorsogon

DONSOL, Sorsogon, 21Aug2013 – Two persons were reported killed in a small scale mining operation in a village in Donsol, Sorsogon, police report said.

Punong Barangay [village chief] Vicente Alim of Vinisitahan, Donsol, Sorsogon reported to the local police about the tragic end of two miners.

Alim identified the victims as Romy Mendones y Arevalo, 40 years old, single and Larry Arevalo y Retes, 36, married. The victims are both residents of Purok 5, Vinisitahan.

The August 15 tragedy was triggered by a strong rains causing their sudden death due to erosion inside the mine site.

Residents who rescued the victims revealed that their efforts was futile attempt to rescue the mining laborers due to the fallen debris that buried the victims underneath.

Donsol police has disclosed that the tragedy was caused by an illegal mining activity in the area due to treasure hunting.

Police are trying to establish culpability on the part of the person behind the illegal mining as the victims are just hired that caused their bloody end.
