8 dead, widespread flooding brought by heavy monsoon rains

MANILA, 20Aug2013 (PNA) – Eight were confirmed dead and many parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces were submerged in flood brought about by the monsoons rains enhanced by tropical storm “Maring” as of 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that among the eight deaths, one was found in Apayao, one in Bataan, three in Pampanga, two in Cavite, and one in Rizal province.

Some 41 persons were also injured while four others were reported missing.

Flooding worsened after the La Mesa dam cracked open and finally reached its spilling level as residents in low-lying areas were asked to evacuate as water overflowed the Tullahan River.

PAGASA said that as of 7:30 p.m., moderate to intense rains were observed over Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Quezon, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Zambales and Bataan.

The provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Bataan, Muntinupa City, Malabon, San Mateo in Rizal and the towns of Masantol and Guagua in Pampanga were placed under a state of calamity .

PAGASA said the slow moving “Maring” will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms over Luzon and Western Visayas. (PNA)
