24 killed, 274 missing as two ships collide in Cebu

MANILA, 17Aug2013 (PNA) – At least 24 were killed, while 274 were reported as missing after two ships collided in the seawaters of Talisay City in Cebu Friday night.

As of 6:21 a.m. Saturday, reports reaching the Philippine Coast Guard-Action Center in Manila said the collision occurred around 9:03 p.m. when MV Sulpicio Express 7 collided with MV St. Thomas Aquinas at Lawis Ledge in the waters of Talisay City.

MV St. Thomas Aquinas is a passenger ship from Butuan Cty heading for the port of Cebu with 752 passengers and 118 crew. MV Sulpicio Expess 7 is a cargo vessel coming from Cebu and heading for Davao City with 36 crew.

As of 10:53 p.m. Friday, MV St. Thomas Aquinas completely sank.

The PCG-Action center said it is gathering more data from its field office in Cebu. (PNA)
