LEGAZPI CITY, 11Aug2013 (PNA) – Thirty-three fishermen from four town in Catanduanes were confirmed missing since Saturday, an official of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said in a phone interview on Sunday.

Catanduanes province is under public storm warning signal no. 3, due to the presence of tropical Storm “Labuyo.”

Edna Bagadiong, PDRRMC spokesperson, said the 33 missing fishermen were from the towns of Pandan, 14; Gigmoto, 8; Virac, 8, and Bagamanoc, 3.

Quoting a PDRRMC report as of 11:00 a.m. Sunday, Bagadiong said the initial count of missing persons was placed at 40, seven of whom—all fishermen–were able to return home.

She said that despite the warning of an upcoming typhoon, the fishermen went out to the sea on Saturday and were unable to return home that same day.

As this developed, a fire of still-undetermined origin broke out Sunday morning, hitting a commercial building in San Juan St. in the capital town of Virac, Bagadiong said.

Due to lack of firefighting facilities, Gov. Cely Wong has asked the assistance of the Catanduanes airport personnel to sent their firetruck to assist in containing the fire.(PNA)
