MANILA, 16July2013 – The head of the Catholic Church’s interreligious affairs has welcomed another breakthrough in the peace negotiations between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Jolo Bishop Angelito Lampon believes that despite mixed reactions, the signing of the contentious annex on revenue generation and wealth-sharing will bode well for all parties in the end.

“What is important is to keep the peace process moving,” said Lampon, who chairs the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Interreligious Dialogue.

“If it is reasonable enough, then it would be best to concede first then subject it to further negotiation. The important thing is that the peace talks progress,” he said.

After six days of discussion, the annex was approved on Saturday with a sharing scheme of 25-75 percent in favor of Bangsamoro on taxes collected from its area, 50-50 on energy and minerals, and 25-75 on metallic minerals.

Isabela de Basilan Prelate Martin Jumoad also echoed Lampon’s statement, hoping that the peace agreement would finally end problems in Mindanao.

“Well and good! We only hope that the leaders will honestly deliver the basic services that belong to the people,” he said.

“In the past, some regional governors were corrupt and Muslim and Christians in the ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) suffered. It’s not the sharing of wealth as the problem. It’s the sincerity and the honesty to implement the projects for the people,” said Jumoad. (CBCPNews)
