SORSOGON CITY, 6July2013 (BicolToday.com) – The top-ranked spokesman of the National Democratic Front (NDF) in the Bicol Region was among the 8 rebels killed by Army troopers in an encounter early morning of July 4, in Juban town, this province.
Greg Bañares, well known in media circles as the official NDF spokesperson, was admitted by the rebel group, New People’s Army (NPA) as among the casualties.
The Celso Minguez Command, (CMC) NPA operating group in Sorsogon, posted a statement in the website detailing the Juban encounter, and identified their slain comrades. These were NDF-Bicol (Frankie Joe Soriano), Ka Miloy (Pehing Hipa), Ka Nel (Christine Puche), Ka Gary (Ted Palacio), Ka Rey (David Llunar), Ka Nene (Romero Añonuevo), Ka Jay (William Villanueva, Jr), at Ka Kevin (Ailyn Calma). Two among the casualtes were women.
However, the rebel group said, in the statement, that “it was a massacre and overkill when their comrades was slain by Army troopers.”
They said so much firepower was poured by soldiers into the (already) dead victims, and that the conduct was in clear violation of internationally-accepted protocol on armed engagement, and on wounded casualties who are no longer capable of fighting back.
“The casualties were martyrs in the struggle in the fight for freedom and liberation,” said Samuel Guerrero, who identified himself as the spokesman of Sorsogon rebels.
Guerrero said the Army soldiers belonging to the 31st Infantry Batallion, under Colonel Virginson Aquino, allegedly confiscated and pocketed some 300 thousand pesos, part of their organization funds, and withheld it from public knowledge. Included among the loot were 4 laptop camputers, cellphones, and other items.
The Army attack occurred in a remote village of Calomayon, Juban at 5:30 morning of July 4. [BicolToday.com]
