MANILA, 3July2013 – A senior official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed support on the abolition of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.
Commissioner Lucenito Tagle said he supports the call to abolish the youth polls since he believes that it does not teach good values the Filipino youth.
“First, you need a huge budget to be able to conduct SK polls. Only two million will participate, with a low turnout and it does not have good result on the youth,” he said.
Tagle also cited cases they handled involving parents of SK candidates who are intervening about vote-buying and other irregularities.
“Imagine at that age yun ang charge against each other. Hindi ganun dapat e. they are being exposed to all of these things at the early stage,” he added.
Although, he does not know the exact amount of holding an SK poll, the Comelec official said the total amount for conducting a Barangay and SK polls is at P3.4 billion.
Since the Barangay Council has the youth representative, he noted that it is the best alternative for SK.
“In the barangay council they have youth representative, I think this is the best alternative for SK. They just need to strengthen it (youth representative),” Tagle added.
On Monday, Atty. Romulo Macalintal also supports the calls to abolish SK polls saying that it does not serve the purpose for which it was created.
“I do not see anything political training for the youth. I cannot see any program for the development of the SK as an organization,” said the election lawyer. (PNA)
