NAGA CITY, 8June2013 – A news stringer for a Cebu City-based radio station was shot dead inside the store he owned in Masbate province Sunday morning, June 1.

Miguelito “Mike” Rueras, stringer for station dyDD El Nuevo Bantay Radyo 1280 kHZ, was the third media worker murdered in the province.

A still unidentified gunman shot Rueras inside his store at the public market of Pio V. Corpus town, the Masbate chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP Masbate) reported.

The Masbate provincial police said Rueras died immediately of two gunshots to the chest from a .45-caliber pistol.

The killer then fled on a black motorcycle toward a nearby village.

During the May 2013 elections, Rueras reportedly stopped submitting reports to dyDD to work for the campaign of re-elected Masbate Gov. Rizalina Seachon-Lanete.

In a statement, NUJP Masbate condemned the killing, expressing fears that “the murder of Rueras might find its place in the archived cases handled by the police authorities.”

The two Masbate journalists earlier murdered are Nelson Nadura (Dec. 2, 2003) and Antonio Castillo (June 12, 2009). Their deaths, according to NUJP Masbate, “remain unsolved as of this day and the killers are still scot free.”

“We…strongly urge the Philippine National Police to bring justice to the families of our slain colleagues by sending the perpetrator and others involved to jail and suffer the punitive consequence of the crime committed,” NUJP Masbate said.
