LEGAZPI CITY, 24-April-2013 (PNA) – The Bicol University (BU) here said it is honored with having its top swimming athlete Arianne Armi Alcantara included in the Philippine swimming team to compete in the 27th Summer Universiade or the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, in July.
“Alcantara, 18, a topnotch swimmer belonging to the BU swimming team has been chosen by the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines into the national team, giving us the pride of owning her,” BU president Fay Lauraya on Monday said.
The BU sophomore, who trained under the supervision of the Philippine Swimming League headed in Bicol by Lawyer Ma. Teresa Mahiwo, is the first-ever Bicolana to be picked into the Philippine swimming team to the Universiade, Lauraya added.
Mahiwo is founder of the Ibalong Magayon Aquagliders Swim Club here that boasts of 60 members aged 5-18 and is making inroads in interclub competitions.
The national team will compete with other contingents representing different countries in the international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
The name Universiade of the competition is a combination of the words “University” and “Olympiad.”
It is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in different cities.
Considered as second to the Olympic Games in popularity and importance, the Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports with 13 compulsory disciplines and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.
The compulsory sports events are fencing, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, swimming, diving, water polo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. (PNA)
