SORSOGON CITY – (12-April-2013) – The municipal mayor of Donsol, Sorsogon died before noon Thursday, a close relative of the local official said.

Mayor Jerome Alcantara was rushed to a hospital in Legazpi City after experiencing weakness and difficulty of breathing, the source said.

Doctors at the Aquinas University Hospital confined him at the intensive care unit but he died at around 11:35 a.m.

No official statement was released by the hospital as to the cause of death.

A political ally, who refused to be identified, said the 77-year old mayor had been confined earlier in a hospital in Manila after suffering a mild stroke.

Alcantara was seeking re-election in the May 13 polls under the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

His vice mayor, Emeterio Belmonte Jr., had assumed office to avoid a vacuum in the local government.

The family has yet to decide whom to field as substitute candidate for mayor.

The town of Donsol, about 50 kilometers west of Sorsogon City, has become world-famous for its whale shark interaction.
