MANILA (19-Dec-2012/PNA) – Filipino boxing champ, Nonito Donaire, Jr., on Wednesday hopes that his stunning win over Mexican boxing icon Jorge Arce over the weekend would give Filipinos something to cheer about this Christmas as the country struggles to repair the damage caused by Typhoon “Pablo” early in the month.
The champion, who arrived from the United States early Wednesday, also thanked anew the Filipinos who prayed for his win over Arce in Houston, Texas last weekend.
“I did everything I could. Christmas is coming and hopefully Filipinos have something to smile about. I hope I gave them a reason to smile,” he said in an television interview.
Last Sunday, Donaire did the country proud by knocking out Arce into retirement, at a time Filipinos were badly in need of good news.
His win came a week after Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez and amid tragedies brought by “Pablo”.
Donaire said he was dedicating his fight not just to Filipino boxing fans but also those affected by the calamity.
“I’m dedicating this fight to all who supported me and to those affected by calamities,” he emphasized. (PNA)
