Journalist assaulted by town mayor brother in Sorsogon

SORSOGON CITY (BicolToday.com/23-Sept-2012) – Officer of nationwide media group was assaulted by the brother of a town mayor in Sorsogon Province, early Sunday morning of September 23, in front of other newsmen and Sorsogon Governor Raul Lee during a small gathering in a coffee shop in Sorsogon City.

Roberto “Bobby” Labalan, editor of Sorsogon Now, was physically assaulted by Joseph ‘Nono’ Yap III, brother of Jocelyn Yap-Lelis, mayor of Prieto-Diaz, Sorsogon over an article published in his paper. The attacker is a contractor whose implementation of a government project was the subject of news article.

Labalan is national director of National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and Sorsogon NUJP chapter chairman. He is also chair of the Sorsogon Media Forum.
