LEGAZPI CITY (9- Sept-2012/PNA) — Two high school students died while 73 others were hurt when a garbage truck they were riding fell into a deep ravine in Barangay Itok, Capalonga, Camarines Norte Saturday afternoon, a Philippine Army officer said Sunday.

Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Army Infantry Division spokesperson, identified the fatalities as Sarah Jane de Mesa, 14, of Barangay Mataki, and Robert Gomar, 16, of Barangay Orhap, both of the same town.

Guzman said the wounded students were rushed to the Camarines Norte Provincial Hospital in Daet for treatment.

Investigation showed the accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday as the garbage truck bearing 80 students lost its brake while negotiating a road in Barangay Itok.

Guzman said the students were on their way home after participating in a school sports competition in a neighboring town.

It was learned that a teacher earlier requested the town mayor to shoulder the expenses for a bus rental, but the town executive gave the garbage truck to transport the students to the sports competition site.

Police are conducting further investigation. (PNA)
