LEGAZPI CITY (07-Sept-12/PNA) – Two Army soldiers were killed while four others were hurt in a clash on Thursday between government forces and New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Brgy. San Isidro, a remote village in Bulusan town in Sorsogon, an officer of the Philippine Army (PA) said Friday.
The incident took place at around 10 a.m. Thursday when Army troopers were on security operation at the hinterland of said village when they chance upon a band of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, Army Maj. Harold Cabunoc, deputy Army spokesman said.
The engagement led to a running firefight where two Army enlisted men were killed and four other soldiers were wounded, Cabunoc said.
The identities of the slain soldiers, who are members of the 31 Infantry Battalion in Sorsogon under Col. Theody Toribio, were not yet released pending notification of the slain soldiers’ families, Cabunoc said.
He said that a platoon of NPA were in an advantage point as they were positioned at a higher grounds when the firefight occurred.
Cabunoc, quoting Toribio’s report said a platoon of soldiers led by Lt. Abdul Hamid Salik where sent to check a reported communist encampment in the mentioned village.
“My men were approaching the bushy portion of the area in Sitio Kaprikunan when they were met with fires triggering an intense gunbattle,” Toribio said.
The soldiers overran the encampment when the rebels fled with their dead companion, several landmines and bomb materials were seized at the camp.
Toribio said that at least five dead rebels were carried by their companions. (PNA)
