LEGAZPI CITY (8-Aug-2012/PNA) – A communist guerrilla was killed Wednesday in a clash with government soldiers in a hinterland village in Palanas town in Masbate, a Philippine Army (PA) officer said.
According to Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division (ID) spokesperson, a squad of Army soldiers from the 9th Infantry Battalion (IB) were on combat patrol at about 6:10 a.m. Wednesday at the outskirt of Barangay Intusan, Palanas when the soldiers engaged in a firefight a 12-man New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.
Quoting an initial 9IB report, Guzman said 18 minutes running gun battle ensued that led to the death of a still unidentified NPA rebel. No one was reported injured on the side of the government troops.
Soldiers recovered at the fight scene an M14 Armalite rifle and ammunition, two improvised explosive device (IED).
He said the slain rebel was brought to the town police station for identity purposes and documentation.
Army troopers undertook blocking operations to track down the fleeing communist rebels that escaped towards mountainous terrain in neighboring villages of Palanas town. (PNA)
