LEGAZPI CITY (8-Aug-2012/PNA) – The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) here has reactivated on Tuesday the Quick Response Teams (QRT) and the Water and Sanitation Team (WATSAN)to assist disaster authorities in Metro Manila and neigboring areas affected by massive flooding spawned by torrential rains, a ranking official of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Bicol said Tuesday.

Bernardo Alejandro, OCD regional director and RDRRMC chairperson in an interview said the QRT composed of 21 personnel and the WATSAN composed of 30 personnel, including a water purifying machine, were on standby at the OCD office in Police Camp Gen Simeon Ola here.

Alejandro said “ the teams are ready for dispatch anytime as we are just waiting for instruction from the NDRRMC.”

Asked if the same calamity occurs in Bicol how would disaster authorities address the problem of flooding, Alejandro quickly retorted that disaster councils across the region have been regularly advised to be prepared for any disaster event that might happen.

“We have regularly conducted disaster drills in times of storms, earthquakes, tsunami. This way, they are prepared for any eventualities,” Alejandro said.

The entire region is experiencing fair weather today, however local fishermen were advised of possible rough seas due to the northwest monsoon.

The RDRRMC is holding today the First RDRRMC Bicol Olympics at the Philippine Navy compound participated in by member agencies and local disaster councils and media as part of the culminating activity in the observance of the Natural Disaster Consciousness Month in July.(PNA)
