LEGASPI CITY ( – Two media practitioners in the Bicol Region received death threats last June, and it was only reported recently to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).

Mayon Times Publisher Leonardo L. “Leo” Balsarza , Jr informed NUJP Albay chapter that he received on June 27, a .38 caliber bullet placed in a brown envelope. The words “Doronela and Balsarza Warning” were written on the envelop in red ink. Balsarza believes Doronela refers to Lamberto Doronela, a regular columnist in his paper.

The 63-year-old publisher said the envelope was left in front of the door of his house in St. Vincent Village, Cabañgan, Legazpi City. His son found it between 6:30 and 7 am.
Balsarza also said a witness saw a person wearing a mask on board of a motorcycle near their house.

Balsarza claimed it was the first threat he has received in his entire career as a publisher, but he believes it was mainly for Doronela.

Meanwhile, Doronela told NUJP Albay that he tackles diverse local issues from different sources and informants. He denied having any personal dealings with the people involved in any of the issues he discuss.

Doronela also hosts a program in a local radio station in Legazpi City and also works as an insurance agent. []
