LEGASPI CITY (BicolToday.com/25-July-2012) – Cause-oriented lawyers in Albay formed their own chapter of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) on July 19, 2012, the affair attended by fourteen (14) lawyers, three (3) paralegal workers, and three (3) law students.
Members of the newly formed group are lawyers, who are either have long-been engaged in human rights and people’s lawyering, or committed to the promotion, protection, and defense of human rights whether under government employment or in private practice.
NUPL Vice President for Luzon, Atty. Joven G. Laura, facilitated the election, while NUPL National President, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares inducted the officers.
The NUPL Albay chapter officers are Atty. Bartolome Rayco (Chairperson), Atty. Madonna Gay Escio (Vice-Chairperson), Atty. Lorrain Marcaida (Secretary), Atty. Peter Vega II (Treasurer), Atty. Rey Daep (Auditor), and Atty. Ritche Regala (PIO).
The chapter officers and members are under the assistance and direction of the elected Council of Advisers composed of veteran human rights and FLAG lawyer, a retired judge, and a lady government prosecutor. The law student representative is Ms. Maria Lovella Diaz, and the paralegal representative is Mr. Paul Vincent Casilihan.
With the chapter formed, Albay now has an organized group of cause-oriented lawyers, and the group expects more number of committed lawyers will work together for the promotion, protection, and defense of the civil, political, economic, and cultural rights of the Albayanos, particularly the poor and oppressed sectors through NUPL’s programs.
Having a noble objective, the membership foresees more dedicated lawyers, law students, and paralegals will join their ranks and its programs will be strengthened and expanded.
NUPL is a voluntary national bar association of peoples’ lawyers founded on September 15-16, 2007, and organized as a response to the urgent need to legally address the massive violations of human rights in the country, especially those committed against the poor and the defenseless sectors of our society.
