LEGAZPI CITY (29-March-2012/PNA) – A couple drowned when their banca capsized due to big waves off the waters of San Pascual town in Masbate, a Philippine National Police (PNP) officer said Thursday.
Belated police report identified the drowned victims as Vicente Rinzales, 55, a fisherman and his wife Delia, residents of Sitio Timog, Barangay (village) Bulod, San Pascual town in Masbate, Police Supt. Renato Bataller, PNP Bicol spokesperson, said.
Bataller, however, said the couple’s two grandchildren identified as James, 10, and Aslor, 7, both surnamed Rinzales, survived the incident.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. on Tuesday while the couple along with their grandchildren on board a paddled banca were on their way to San Pascual town.
Police investigators said the banca while traversing the sea waters of San Pascual was hit by big waves and then capsized.
Fishermen around 5:45 p.m. fished out Delia’s body while Vicente along with his grandchildren were rescued and brought to a hospital in San Pascual town.
Attending physicians however declared Vicente dead on arrival while his grandchildren survived and were treated.
The two victims of drowning in San Pascual town in Masbate brought to six the drowning death toll in Bicol since Sunday.
The government weather bureau said incessant rains in the region were due to the low pressure area (LPA) in Puerto Princesa and the Tail End of the Cold Front (TECF).
