Army soldier killed in NPA attack in Catanduanes

LEGAZPI CITY (27-March-2012/PNA) – An Army soldier was killed and another wounded when a military truck carrying a platoon from the 83rd Infantry Battalion was attacked on Monday by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Balatohan in San Miguel town in Catanduanes, a Philippine Army (PA) officer said Tuesday.

Killed during the ambush was identified as Private First Class Edel A. Llamas while the wounded as Private First Class Elisio N. Gran.

Gran, was hit in the right leg was brought to Eastern Bicol Medical Center in Virac, Catanduanes and is now in stable condition, said PA Bicol spokesman Major Angelo Guzman.

“Pfc Llamas provided suppressive fires against the rebels with his K3 submachinegun despite heavy enemy fires. This brave act allowed the rest of the platoon unload the truck then engaged the NPA rebels in a five minute firefight before the rebels retreated,” said Ltc Rod Batang, Commanding Officer of the 83rd Infantry Battalion stationed in Catanduanes.

The soldiers came from a security patrol to protect a hydroelectric plant in Solong village in San Miguel town prior to the ambush.

Intelligence reports disclosed that NPA rebels gave notice to destroy the hydroelectric plant after extortion demands were denied by the plant’s management.

Pursuit operations were launched against the ambushers.

In 2009, NPA rebels attacked the Solong hydroelectric plant after the firm refused to give in to extortion demands of the rebels. (PNA)
