SORSOGON CITY (22-March-2012) – Giving importance to the role of Overseas Filipino Workers in nation building, the administration of City Mayor Leovic Dioneda is campaigning for the documentations in the sixty four barangays of the Sorsogon City of local residents who are working overseas. The move was the answer of the city government on the request of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to document overseas workers to easily facilitate information on critical concerns that an OFW may encounter while working abroad.
The information was relayed by Councilor Aldin Ayo of West District who was given the green light by the Sangguniang Panlungsod to coordinate with barangay officials in gathering data from the relatives of OFW’s. Ayo said that this is a timely request since it is the intention of the city government to assist kins of city residents OFW’s in times of crisis, particularly those who are working in conflict areas. “The city government plans to set-up database for homegrown OFW’s, it will be match by programs for counseling, direct communication links in times of crisis and very useful in securing financial assistance form OWWA if need be,” Ayo said.
The data collected can be the basis of possible legislative actions aimed to further protect the status of locals who are OFW’s. In mind the councilor added is to call for a citywide OFW assembly to gather critical information their family may need during their absence with the assistance of the city social services department and other key departments at city hall.
