Climate change scenarios must be attended – VP Binay

SORSOGON CITY – Taking the issue of adaptability of housing designs in disaster prone areas of the country, Vice-President Jejomar Binay challenged local government executives in highly vulnerable communities to understand the impact of local climate change scenarios and coordinate their actions with other agencies of the government.

This was his message at the 4th quarter assessment of the Program Management Committee of the UN-MDG here. The Vice-President revealed that his chairmanship of Housing and Urban Development Council is conducting researched on how to develop an climate change resilient community that are environmentally sustainable in line with the commitment of the Philippine government when it signed a UN covenant 11 years ago as partner in the Millenium Development Goals.

Taking note of the limited knowledge of local government units in adapting climate change strategies, he acknowledge the roles of UN attached agencies that are conducting and institutionalizing programs to reverse the negative perception of communities of climate change. Without elaborating, Binay was sending a message that the national government considered climate change as tops of its agenda where disaster vulnerable settlements are recommended for funding links with United Nations thru the Millenium Development Goals.

The experienced of Sorsogon City on their understanding of the climate change paved the entry of the United Nation Habitat Program resulting in meaningful engagement that institutionalized housing designs that are climate change resilient.

Knowing the millennium goals that “no one must be left behind” the vice-president acknowledged the need for sectoral, national agenda and putting premiums on national priorities which is human settlement that are climate change resilient.

HUDC said he, is building with nature a climate resilient human settlement where the poor are factored to build a real house and shelter adaptable to climate change. He was in agreement with the UN representative that the programs must be ensure from mere demonstration to action and adaptation synergizing it with inplaced strategy.

The impacted projects are bearing results and at the occasion it was announced that Sorsogon City was chosen as a pilot area to institutionalized the process of implementing climate resilient settlements. BicolToday.com
