BARCELONA, Sorsogon (Sept. 24) – Two policemen were hurt when communist guerrillas attacked on Friday evening the Philippine National Police (PNP) station in Barcelona town in Sorsogon, the police said.

Police Inspector Edgar Azotea, Barcelona town police chief, said that about 30 New People Army (NPA) rebels bearing M16 Armalite rifles positioned themselves at the police station gate near the town hall and fired at the posted police sentinel.

At the first volley of gun fire, 12 policemen on duty were able to retaliate and fired back at the attacking rebels that led to a sporadic firefight that lasted for about an hour, Azotea said.

The NPA rebels, sensing that they could not overrun the defending policemen, withdrew towards the neighboring town of Bulusan.

Wounded at the firefight were Police Officer 2 Joel Encinares and PO1 Jessie Doloiras who suffered superficial wounds in the ear and hands, respectively.

Police Chief Supt. Cecillo Calleja Jr., Bicol police director, said in a phone interview he has directed his police provincial chief to dispatch additional police personnel to track down the attackers that are members of the communist Guerrilla Front (GF) 79 under the leadership of one Ka Magno operating in Sorsogon.

Calleja also commended Azotea and his men for courageously repulsing the attacking rebels despite being outnumbered. (PNA)
