DAVAO CITY – Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte clarified that his acceptance as resource speaker of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDF) is motivated by his aspiration for the good and lasting peace of the country.

Speaking in the public affairs program, ”Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” on Sunday, Duterte said his concern for the general welfare was always a motivating factor in rendering public service.

Duterte said members of the NDF peace panel want him to give his thoughts on local governance and the impact of future peace agreement to local governments, being mayor of the city for 18 years.

He affirmed that the NDF invitation for him to attend the resumption of peace talks in Norway either on September or October.

Duterte said he opted to attend the talks during warm weather.

“God willing, I can join the peace talks in Norway,” he said.

Duterte allayed the fears of the police and the military on this development.

He said as a vice mayor, he has nothing to do with military operations.

Duterte said all he wanted to know were the broader parameters of the peace talks.

“I do not share secrets neither with the military nor with the rebels. The military is respectful enough not to ask something from men while the rebels avoid asking me about military operations. I am just a public employee doing my job,” he said as he stressed that he does not tinker with military operations.

Duterte also said that he can also be a resource speaker for the government peace panel.

“The best way is to be transparent about any information given to them. My phone needs not to be tapped,” he said citing that all issues to be discussed are matters of public interest.

He maintained that as government employee, his loyalty is on the public and the constitution.

Duterte said that all pieces of advice he’ll give would always be for the good of the country.

“All of my proposals will be geared towards the realization of peace for all men,” he said. (Joey Sem G. Dalumpines/PNA)
