LEGAZPI CITY – A police officer was shot dead at dawn Wednesday by suspected communist hitmen in Barangay (village) Poblacion Barcelona town in Sorsogon, a Philippine National Police (PNP) officer said.
Killed was Senior Police Officer 1 Antonio Furio, 51, married, and a native of Barcelana town.
Police Senior Inspector Ayn Natuel, PNP Bicol spokesperson, said the victim was attacked at about 12:08 AM Wednesday by three suspected members of the Sparrow Unit of the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels while the victim was attending an Alumni Homecoming at the Barcelona Comprehensive National High School (BCNHS).
The attackers armed with a 9mm and .45 caliber handguns approached the victim and fired at him at close range.
The victim was rushed to the Gubat District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival (DOA) by attending physicians, who said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The attackers immediately fled the scene while taking advantage of the crowd that panic at the crime scene.
Crime investigators recovered from the scene three empty shells of a 9mm hand gun and two empty shells of a .45 cal. pistol.
Responding policemen conducted hot pursuit operation and scoured barangay San Isidro, a neighboring village where the NPA rebels flee. (PNA)
