MASBATE CITY — Top local officials are asking the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to look into some complaints hurled by residents of Aroroy, Masbate against a big company engaged in extracting gold in the town.
In a resolution, Governor Rizalina Seachon-Lanete ang the Sangguniang Panlalawigan asked the DENR’s Environment Management Bureau (EMB) and Mining and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to ferret out the truth in people’s allegations that Filminera Resources Corp.’s operations has wrought havoc on their environment.
According to Masbate Board Member Juan Sanchez Sr., chair of SP committee on environment and natural resources, the provincial government needed the honest assessment of EMB’s and MGB’s in view of the anti-mining groups’ clamor for the provincial government to replicate the South Cotabato’s total ban against open-pit mining.
Open-pit mining is the same method employed by Filminera and its business partner, the Australian-based Central Gold Asia, in its gold project in Aroroy, he added. (Ernie Delgado)
