SORSOGON CITY – The members of Philippine Army visited the captured NPA rebels to render Christmas songs and share some gifts to them, a military official said.

Lt. Col Rodolfo Batang, Civil Military Operations officer of the 9th Infantry Division said that he was directed by Major General Ruperto “Raffy” Pabustan, the Commander of the 9th Infantry Division to bring some Christmas gifts for the three captured rebels.

Batang and 10 other soldiers trooped to the hospital bed of Elmer Escobido aka Ka Alvin 24, who is still recuperating from his wounds in a local hospital here.

Escobido can barely talk but smiled when soldiers, together with the local media and hospital personnel sang “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit” for him. He was given a cash gift of P5,000.00 as part of the Army’s medical assistance.

“This is our humble way of showing to you the true essence of Christmas which is sharing the blessings from God. As promised, we will help you return to the mainstream society,” Batang said.

Minutes later, the soldiers proceeded to the nearby jail where Escobido’s comrades are imprisoned.

Initially hesitant to face his soldier visitors, Jason Brul aka Ka Butch, was finally convinced by one of the officers who went inside his prison cell.

As he walked outside with Nelson Punilas, his comrade, soldiers greeted him with their rendition of the Taglish version of the birthday song as he sat in a wooden stool beside Punilas.

“I am very thankful for my friends who took time to visit me here again,” Brul said, who has just turned 34 today.

The rebels are facing raps of illegal possession of firearms and explosives before a local court in Bulusan and Gubat town.

He also expressed his Christmas wishes to his comrades who are still in the mountain. “I wish you all good health and happiness this Christmas,” said Brul.

No to Amnesty

Meanwhile, in a separate interview the rebel leader denied the reports that he is accepting the amnesty being offered by the military. Brul said that he is going to face the charges filed against him in court.

He said that until the Philippine government is being run by opportunists’ and corrupt officials he will not abandon his principles and causes in the interest of the Filipino people.  Many of my comrades have already risks their lives, a number of innocent civilians are victims of AFP death squads, why I am going to leave the masses and surrender our arms?, Brul added.

CPP 42nd year

The rebel leader lauded on the occasion of the 42nd founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines.  Brul stressed that all party members must “Fulfill the requirements for the advance of the people’s war from the strategic defensive to the strategic stalemate” based on the statement released by Central Committee of CPP.

According to the statement “The worsening crisis of world capitalism and that of the semicolonial and semifeudal system provide us with the favorable conditions for further strengthening the subjective forces of the revolution and advancing our people’s war from one stage to another. The ruling classes of big compradors and landlords are incapable of solving the crisis and are aggravating it as a consequence of their subservience to foreign monopoly capitalism, their plundering character and their brutality. The people are suffering more than ever before and they are driven by the crisis to fight fiercely for their national and democratic rights and interests.”

Brul expressed his heartfelt appreciation to his comrade who help and gave him morale support during his incarceration. BICOLTODAY.com
