BULAN, SORSOGON – A human rights worker in this town was survive in a recent attack two days after the commemoration of the 62nd year anniversary of the declaration of International Human Rights Day last December 12, 2010 at around 10:30 in the evening.
In a belated report released by Karapatan, Matias Oliquino, 74 years old, a resident of Barangay Montecal suffered two gunshots in his right back and left tight from undetermined caliber.
According also to witness the victim was his way home when the unidentified assailant shot him twice and fled in an undetermined direction.
Oliquino is a municipal coordinator of Sorsogon Peoples Organization (SPO) based in this town. SPO is a human rights defenders group and an umbrella organization of Karapatan Sorsogon. The victim is also a member of Bayan Muna partylist of the said municipality and actively campaigning senatorial candidates Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza last May 10 election, according to Karapatan.
Karapatan also said Oliquino’s group where block in a military checkpoint conducted by Phillipine Army based in barangay Cabugaan, Bulan during the commemoration of human rights day wherein other delegates were harassed and told to go home.
Karapatan Sorsogon condemns the recent attack to their members and workers. They also ask for an immediate action of authorities to resolve the case.
Meanwhile, the victim is now recuperating from bullet wounds in an undisclosed hospital in Bicol region. BICOLTODAY.com
