GUBAT, Sorsogon — Mystery hovers over the reported blocks of cocaine found along the coastal waters in Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and now off the coastline of Sorsogon.

About 39 kilograms of water-proof blocks of cocaine were found by three fishermen at the eastern sea waters of Barangay Bagacay, Gubat, Sorsogon at around 12:00 noon Monday, May 27, 2019.

The blocks of cocaine were immediately brought before village officials and turned over to Gubat police.

Follow-up investigation in police crime laboratory revealed the items were pure cocaine with street value of Php5 – 6 million per kilo, or total of Php 234 million.

Critics on anti-drug enforcement noted that investigation on floating blocks of cocaine found off the Bicol coastal water is focused on on-site discoveries and never on the regional level, such as, if there is a shipwreck off the coastal waters of the Bicol Region that forced drug smugglers to unload their illegal cargo, or if the blocks were unloaded to float off the coastal waters ready to be fished out by sea vessel-riding traffickers who are guided by satellite-fed tracking devices.

In the last few weeks, blocks of cocaine were found along the coasts of Catanduanes and Camarines Norte.

Many things are left unreported, or under-reported by authorities, critics said. []
