Holy Thursday tragedy: Two tourists from Calamba drowned off Malawmawan Island, Castilla, Sorsogon

CASTILLA, Sorsogon Province – Two tourists from Calamba, Laguna, drowned Thursday afternoon in the seawater off Castilla, this province.

Police identified the victims as Ajay Jimenea, 24 years old, and a resident of 317 Camias St., Halang Lake View Subdivision Calamba City, Laguna and Roberto Tabuso Buban, 45, married, driver and a resident of Gladiola St. Ma. Salome, Subdivision, Halang, Calamba City, Laguna. The victims were identified by Ajay’s mother, Mrs. Analiza Jimenea and friends after follow-up investigation by police.

According to police investigation, at about 2:00 in the afternoon of April 18, 2019, two unidentified male persons, one with more or less 5”6’ in height, 40-50 years of age, wearing black t- shirt with Tau Gamma Phi marking wearing blue shorts and one with more or less 5’5 in height, 20 to 25 years of age wearing white t-shirt and blue shorts, were seen floating in the seawater off Malawmawan Island in Brgy. According to Police Major Nicolas L. Malipot Jr, OIC of Castilla police, in his report to Police Colonel Marlon C. Tejada, Provincial Director, the caretaker of Malawmawan Island, Jonathan Moraleda Lozano discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified person floating at said place and immediately reported to Bantay Dagat Office.

Upon getting the report, Bantay Dagat Rolly Marana informed the personnel of Castilla MPS and ordered his fellow Bantay Dagat to recover the said cadaver. Upon recovery of the first body the team subsequently recovered the second floating body meters away. The victims were brought to Vicente Peralta Memorial Hospital for possible revival/medical attention, but they were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The victim’s mother, Ms. Analiza Jimenea, said that “at around 9:30 AM of April 18, 2019, they were having their family outing at Malawmawan Island where both victims went on swimming in the middle of the sea without precautionary measures that led to their drowning”.
