Think-tank group insists Manila Water must pay for consumers’ burden over water crisis

MANILA – An infrastructure-oriented think tank urged embattled Manila Water Co. to undertake voluntary commitments on discussions concerning rebates and rate adjustments favoring affected consumers within their concession area.

This was suggested by Terry Ridon, Infrawatch PH convenor and President Rodrigo Duterte’s former urban poor chief.

“What is critical to consumers at this point is providing immediate relief for the unexpected, unnecessary economic costs caused by the water crisis.”

Ridon said that by undertaking voluntary commitments, Manila Water will be showing good faith to all affected customers that it will likewise take a ‘severe economic hit’ amid the continuing water crisis.

Rebate amount should cover costs for unexpected, unintended purchases of water crisis incidentals

Ridon estimates that each affected household spent around one thousand pesos in the emergency purchase of water containers and incidentals.

“This should be the baseline amount for any discussion concerning customer rebates due to the water crisis, as these constitute actual but unexpected costs paid by affected households.”

Waive minimum monthly fees during duration of water crisis

Ridon said that Manila Water should seriously explore waiving the monthly minimum fees for households which experienced daily 24-hour water interruption.

“On top of the rebate, waiving the minimum monthly fees in favor of many, mostly poorer households will be a form of voluntary restitution of Manila Water for the severe inconvenience of having their water supply interrupted for days, if not weeks.” [BicolToday.com]
