21 Bodies recovered in Sañgay, Cam Sur landslide; 17 still missing

SAÑGAY, Camarines Sur, 31Dec2018 (BicolToday.com) — 21 bodies were recovered from the landslide in a populated sitio of Barangay Patitinan, this town, after 4 days of heavy rains unleashed by Tropical Depression Usman.

The disaster area is at Sitio Garang, along a mountain highway leading to Tiwi, Albay.

The highway is carved along a mountain range facing off the Pacific Ocean, and below lays virgin beaches and relatively near, about 3 kilometers distant, is the exclusive beach resort privately-owned by the Fuentebella’s, a wealthy family of politicians.

Reports, still unconfirmed, say there were about 50 person who were carried away in the landslides.

The 21 recovered bodies as of yesterday were still housed at the Patitinan covered court as of Monday morning.

The village cannot reached from Sañgay town proper, about 22 kilometeres distant by road, due to landslide that blocked the highway.

A boat ride by see can reach the disaster area, but the coastal water is unsafe due to storm surges and tidal waves.
