PILI, Camarines Sur – Shara Mae Landicio, spokesperson of Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan, on Monday urged affected students and parents of Bicol Central Academy, where the burning of student backpacks and belongings had taken place, to file formal complaints against the school administration.

The said school is located in Libmanan, Camarines Sur. It is reported owned by the Jaucian family, whom a family member is the school administrator and current member of the Camarines Sur Provincial Board (Sangguniang Panlalawigan), the policy and legislative body of the provincial government.

In a related move, DepEd-Bicol has initiated an investigation on the reported burning of student belongings in the school as allegedly ordered by the school administrator who was under “bouts of tantrum” and shall recommend to the national office to withdraw government assistance to the school worth Php 5,936,000.

“To burn their bags is one thing but to berate his own students and call them “stupid” must be the most ironic and irreconcilable act an educator could ever do,” Landicio said.

“We encourage both the students and their parents to file the necessary lawsuits versus their tormentor but should not stop there. Condemnation and the filing of cases is but a first step in achieving justice,” Landicio added. “All students must be equipped with the knowledge and means to counter abusive school administrators. Empowering themselves now is of utmost necessity as petty tyrants have sprouted in our campuses and communities under a Duterte regime that has encouraged impunity and savagery.”

The student group declared that no amount of words to condemn the dastardly act committed by the abusive school owner of Bicol Central Academy, who moonlights as a provincial board member of Camarines Sur, could match the atrocities he inflicted on senior high school students.

Despite so many laws and regulations enacted to protect the youth from wrongful and exploitative actions by persons of authority especially in an educational institution, the burning of the bags and other academic paraphernalia should not be tolerated and must deserve the severest form of administrative, civil and criminal sanctions, the group said.
