Sen. Chiz to poll winners: Be magnanimous in victory

SORSOGON CITY — ‘’Reach out to your political opponents, forget politics first, move for unity and progress and above all be magnanimous in victory, after all, they are all your constituents.’’

Thus stressed Sen. Francis Joseph ‘’Chiz’’ Escudero in his message shortly after administering the oath of office of newly elected Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) officials recently at his residence in barangay Buhatan with Sen. Sonny Angara as a special guest.

Earlier, the senator also sworn in, in separate occasions, Brgy and SK officials in all the nine towns in the 2nd District: Prieto Diaz, Gubat, Barcelona, Bulusan, Matnog, Bulan, Sta. Magdalena, Irosin, and Juban in the presence of their respective mayor, 2nd Dist Rep. Deogracias Ramos and the latter’s youngest sister, Ditas, touted as the elder Ramos’ successor in the House of Representatives.

Chiz also bared the following plans and programs:

  1. By the end of 2018, all arterial roads connecting the 14 towns and only city in Sorsogon province will have been finished.
  2. By 2019-2020, concreting of the roads in the 541 barangays in the province will have been completed for fast and efficient delivery of agricultural products even in bad weather condition to enhance farmer’s income. No need to write him, Cong. Ding Ramos or his mother, Rep. Evelina Escudero.
  3. Requested barangay officials to provide/ purchase a one-hectare lot outside of the poblacion which will serve as resettlement area of residents now staying in danger zones. He will take care of site development, roads, titling of the lot and its subdivision. Housing units will be constructed at P200 a month amortization. All resources will be maximized in order to provide a potable water supply.
  4. Requested all mayors to look for at least a five-hectare lot for the Inter-faith Cemetery where Catholics, Muslims and those from other religions will be buried. Once finished, the burial site will be turned over to the LGU, a self-sustaining economic enterprise.
  5. Urged all village officials to call for a workshop cum meeting primarily to discuss priorities in the barangay, set aside animosities and work for a better, efficient and clean governance. In his 20 years as a legislator (nine years as a congressman and now on his 11th year as a senator), no case of corruption has been filed against him.
  6. Urged SK officials to use the 10% SK funds to a much better purpose such as contributing to the annual DepEd Brigada Escuela with him giving a counterpart. Elucidating, with 42,000 barangays nationwide receiving a minimum of P1M IRA (Internal Revenue Allotment) that’s a whopping P42-B and 10% of that as SK share is P4.2- B, more than enough to build classrooms, and lastly
  7. Guaranteed the electrification of all sitios in the barangays in the province.

Meanwhile, 2nd Dist. Rep. Deogracias Ramos appealed to village officials to use the government funds judiciously, always bearing in mind the primordial interest of the community instead of personal interest.

He said it is incumbent upon us elected officials, to act with prudence, putting into good use, the funds entrusted to us by the government.

As in the past, Ramos adds, his advocacy is always for a better nutrition program as he urged Barangay and SK officials to also provide funds for nutrition program which entails just a minimal amount of funding.

Reminded of the continued tirades against him by Gov. Bobet Lee Rodrigueza’s ‘’barkers’’ in the media, Ramos said almost daily he’s the subject of virulent attacks of the governor’s men, oftentimes bordering on personal matters such that of his being old (he is 86 years old, he said, and that of his sister, Ditas, who on Feb 17, this year, turned 74 years old).

He then retorted, kay si Raul (former Gov. Raul Lee) nan Sally (incumbent city mayor) dili gurang naman?(why, are Raul, former governor and city mayor Sally Lee) also not old? Born Aug. 23, 1940 Gov. Raul Lee will be 78 this year while City Mayor Sally Lee, born on July 26, 1942 will be 76 years old this year, two years older than Cong. Ramos’ sister, Ditas.

Ramos also downplayed the awards received by Gov. Bobet Lee Rodrigueza, calling him instead, the Tarpaulin Governor, referring to Rodrigueza’s propensity to announce the awards via big tarpaulins conspicuously displayed beside the PNP substation fronting the SNHS main building and in some towns in the province. The awards the congressman referred to were those from private groups and not from the national government.

He said he’s proud of his accomplishments. In his first term as congressman, he won in Matnog and Prieto Diaz (also in Gubat, his hometown) and his reelection in 2013 and 2016 (for his 3rd and last term) he won convincingly in all the nine towns in his district inflicting humiliating defeat over his opponents, even in the latter’s own bailiwicks.

His last term, expiring on June 30, 2019, Ramos disclosed he is launching the candidacy of his sister Ditas as his successor on the basis of the solid endorsement of the mayors in the 2nd district.

Meanwhile, Rep. Evelina Escudero, senator Chiz’ mother, assured full support to the needs of the barangays in the 1st District and exhorted, particularly the young SK officials, to learn and practice good politics, good governance and the right service to the people.

On the other hand, Vice Gov. Ester Hamor expressed her profound thanks for the continued support of village officials and also expressed optimism she would get their support in the coming months. Walang iwanan, she said in Tagalog. The Vice Governor, who has earlier declared her candidacy for the city mayorship, is considered a top contender for the said position in 2019.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Pto. Diaz town Mayor Benito “Boyte” Doma, president of Sorsogon Mayor’s League, affirmed Cong. Ramos’ impeccable record as a multi-awarded mayor of Gubat town for 19 years and as a congressman for nine years ending in 2019, untainted with corruption, the best way of bringing the government closer to the people.

Ramos’ infrastructure development program, Doma adds, undoubtedly has considerably changed the physical landscape in the 2nd District surely worthy to emulate and a legacy forever we could be proud of. Cong Ramos, in fact, has surpassed the accomplishments of his predecessors in the 2nd District, a mute testimony of his sincere and dedicated service to his constituents, Doma further averred.
