Gubat town sets 254th founding anniversary

GUBAT, Sorsogon (BicolToday.com) — Mayor Sharon Glipo-Escoto has lined up a 13-day series of exciting and colorful activities in connection with this town’s 254th foundation day starting with a holy mass June 1 and ending with a Barayle (Dance) sa Plaza at the Pamana Terminal on the 13th, Fiesta day, said Rhodora Paula Yuzon, Tourism Officer designate.

Yuzon said what makes this year’s festivity doubly significant is, among others, the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between this town’s LGU and that of Liliw town in Laguna province which would pave the way for Liliw’s slippers and shoemakers to teach interested Gubatnons the intricacies of shoemaking using abaca. Liliw is known for its export quality “espadrille” shoes made of abaca.

Other activities are the Ginubat Festival Street Dance Competition where the champion, 1st and 2nd runner-ups will get P100K, P75K and P50K prizes, respectively; the TM Pabinggo and the Liga ng mga Barangay Pista sa Nayon (Brgy Night), all on June 11; Independence Day celebration and Ginubat Festival Tugtugan with the Orange ands Lemons Band on June 12.

Earlier, the following events were held: Pamahaw, pasasalamat with farmers, fishermen and teachers; Grand parade, Agri-trade fair and food bazar, Teachers’ night, Ginubat Olympics, Pasalingaya of Mayor Edwin Hamor, Arbor Day, Job fair, LGBT Night, Osca Night, Dance Recital of Kookie Escorsa Jacob’s Performing Arts, Gubat Cultural Society Day, Clean up drive, Blessing of Escurel-Sabater House as Heritage Center and the Alumni Homecoming of St. Anthony Academy and Gubat National High School.
Meanwhile, Klaire Jean Escandor Abano of Brgy Buenavista and Gerald dela Cruz of Balud Sur are this year’s Dayang Mara and Gat Silo, respectively.

Gubat, a tagalog world which means forest originated from the word Ginubat, referring to the frequent raids by Muslim pirates against Christian settlers residing near the shorelines fronting the Pacific Ocean about two centuries ago.

A former barrio of Bulusan, Gubat became a town on June 13, 1764 with Don Pedro Manook as Its first teniente del barrio who later became the first Gobernadorcillo.

A second class municipality with 42 barangays, its population in 2015 census was 59,524 and its registered voters in the May 14, 2018 Barangay and Sk Elections, according to Bernard “Apan” Dealagdon , Gubat Comelec registrar, was 35,375. It is the 3rd largest town in Sorsogon province, and one of the nine municipalities comprising the 2nd Congressional district under 3-termer Rep. Deogracias “Ding” Ramos.

Gubat is famous for its Rizal Beach Resort in barangay Rizal, and the Lola Sayong Surf Camp in Brgy. Buenavista which, thru Gubat Sorsogon Surfers Association headed by Bidge Villaroya produced champions in five national events, according to an FB LGU post.

Yuzon said Mayor Escoto is confident of the success of this year’s fiesta revelry in honor of the town’s patron saint, St Anthony of Padua. [BicolToday.com]
